In 2003, the struggle in Darfur, Sudan over land and power began. The Sudanese government is accused of not protecting the Western region of Sudan known as Darfur. This marginalization has caused a rise two rebel movements. The two movements are the Sudan Liberation Army and the Justice and Equality Movement. Due to their acts of acquiring arms, the government unleashed the Arab militias known as Janjaweeds. The Janjaweed militias are attacking Darfur villages causing people to relocate. Some of the problems include rape, torture, murder, and starvation. In 2005, the international criminal court decided to do a human rights investigation, however the government refused to agree.
